Published in 1954, Nectar in a Sieve is a novel by Kamala Markandaya.

I first came across it in the now defunct book discussion forum on familyplanet.org. Like most of the books on that particular list, I found it a valuable peek into a culture not my own. I enjoy reading a series of books with a similar theme so was delighted to find this forum which highlighted women's lives in various cultures.

Nectar in a Sieve is the story of an arranged, poverty stricken but loving marriage in post colonial India. Dowry, the young age of Rukmani when first married, the fate of her children and husband, rural life and forced change are all themes that run through the book.

I truly enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you enjoy reading novels about the life of genuine people - the good and the bad. It is especially valuable if you also enjoy reading about various cultures.
