The NASDAQ is a stock exchange based in New York and run by the National Association of Securities Dealers. The NASDAQ has also merged with the AMEX. Many technology stocks, soon-to-be including Red Hat, are listed in the NASDAQ exchange. Like all stock exchanges the NASDAQ always goes up or down. (Except when it has no clear trend from day-to-day: then it is said to move sideways.) It is just down the street from the NYSE.

The acronym stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. Many a trivia contest can be won with this useful information.
