Since E2 allows other people to easily see which writeups I created recently, but not which I have updated or revised, I will be from now on listing them here. Hated the original writeup? Maybe it's better now. Loved it? Check out the changes and updates.

Livio Dante Porta
Argentina's great steam locomotive engineer passed away on June 10, 2003. An addendum to that effect added, but the whole thing may be rewritten soon.

Ever seen The Omen? Remember Damian, the antichrist? Me, five years old, that was me, almost. Like I was his twin brother.

I've probably been on here long enough that I should have something about ME on here.

I'm 30, an Englishman in California. Living in Anaheim, a block from Disneyland, and working in Newport Beach almost under the John Wayne Airport takeoff path. I'm a UNIX systems administrator by trade, with a sideline in all the random other stuff sysadmins get asked to do. Ex developer, so I can program when I want to; I just found myself burning out when asked to do it day after day.

Born in Hampstead, which for the uninitiated is a borough of London. And no, not on the Heath. Led a peripatetic existence throughout my childhood. My dad was a gardener, and we moved first to the National Trust property of Montacute in Somerset, where I lived until I was five; then to Glenapp Estate in Scotland, near the old fishing village of Ballantrae, north of Stranraer and south of Girvan, where he became the Head Gardener; at the time it was Lord Inchcape's estate, though I don't know who owns it now. Realising that manual labour did not a lifetime's career make, he went to college up in Ayr, which entailed another move. Graduating, he got a job in a center in Durham training the unemployed in the skills of gardening, greenkeeping, landscaping, tree surgery, etc. After a few years of that, we all moved to Oxfordshire, and I stayed there through the rest of my childhood.

I went to college at Imperial College in South Kensington (London) and got a rather scraped-through degree in Computing. Worked for an anti-virus firm for 3 years as a programmer, and then I married an American girl and about a year later moved to California. Been working mostly as a sysadmin here ever since.

The last five years have seen me reviving my childhood interests as a railfan, and you'll probably see that most of my writeups on here are on the topics of trains, railways and transportation, especially since they're pretty under-served here. I know UNIX and computers very well, but there are plenty of you here who do -- I'll leave the noding of those to others. I also have a great deal of knowledge in my head about military technology and history, especially 20th century, and an interest in history in general, though I'm more likely to help others with their writeups in those fields than do them myself. And in general, I'm the worst knowledge sponge ...

Recently acquired an old car, a 1967 Ford Thunderbird, busy re-learning old cars and the fun and trials of driving them. This is inspiring a few writeups too.
