Da Bears are da second team to hold dat nickname. It originally referred to da University of Chicago's football team. Da Maroons' first coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg, is a football legend. Okay, enough of the accent... Under Stagg, they won seven conference titles as a founding member of the Big Ten. These Monsters came from a campus (in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood) in close proximity to the Midway running between Washington Park and Jackson Park, the site of the 1893 World's Fair, hence the nickname. UofC discontinued varsity football in 1939, and left the Big Ten in 1946, to maintain its emphasis on academics.
