The
VR-4 was the top of the line model 3000GT produced by
Mitsubishi Motors in the years 1991 to 1999. Eventually priced out of the market due to
inflation and woefully useless
SUVs.
The VR-4 is a very impressive car, carrying the 3.0L DOHC V6 6G72 engine with twin Mitsubishi TD04 9b turbochargers and twin intercoolers making 300 (91-93) and 320 (94-99) horsepower straight from the factory. It has full-time all wheel drive and rear-wheel assisted steering at high speeds. The pre-1996 models had electrically adjustable suspensions, featuring a Tour mode for a smoother ride, and a Sport mode for laying the smack down at Autocrosses.
Often derided by the Supra and RX-7 crowds because of its weight and lesser aftermarket support, the 3000GT VR-4 is easily modified and can reach very high levels of horsepower. Its only from-the-factory shortcomings are its small turbos and poor stock fuel system - its weak fuel pump, and tiny 360cc fuel injectors. Once these are upgraded, the 3000GT VR-4 is equally on par with the other Japanese imports of equal upgrades.
