Caused by the inability of computers to correctly interpret 00, the two digit date representing 2000.
Supposedly this will cause a massive international infrastructure failure,
when power, water, telecommunications, banks and supply lines become disrupted.
Some predict that anarchy, looting, plagues, and general chaos will become day to day events. Most kids are just hoping it'll give them a nice long winter vacation this year.

On the morning of December 31, 2000, employees of a Norwegian railway company arrived at work to find that none of their high-tech computer-controlled trains would work. Turns out they did all the necessary debugging for the Y2K glitch except for the 366th day of the year.

There's nothing a computer programmer (or debugger) hates dealing with more than a special case.
