A strange monarchy once existed on Beaver Island, Michigan.  James J. Strang, creator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Strangite.)  Strang held a crowning ceremony and proclaimed rulership over his church.  The Strangites built cabins, roads, and churches on Beaver Island.  Strang outstepped his bounds often in terms of assaulting and seizing neighbors' property.  Shortly after flogging two men whose wives wouldn't follow his dress code, Strang was invited aboard the USS Michigan.  The two men shot Strang in the back, boarded the ship and were taken to Mackinaw Island and released uncharged.  After Strang's death, Mobs from Mackinaw island arrived and drove the Strangites off of Beaver Island.
