Me*sem`bry*an"the*mum (?), n. [NL., fr. Gr. midday + flower.] Bot.

A genus of herbaceous or suffruticose plants, chiefly natives of South Africa. The leaves are opposite, thick, and feshy. The flowers usually open about midday, whence the name.
