Latest attempt to get this country that would have been where the Yucatan peninsula is today was made in the late 19th century, but Merida and Campeche stood fast (the latter due to its 5 meter high townwall) but were starved and exhausted as the Mayas did the most incredibly stupid tactical act of human history: All their 'soldiers' went home to harvest - thus allowing the Spanish to get supplies into Campeche and afterwards crush all further resistance.
