Awake in the dark

Awake in the dark, eyes open
But as though they were closed and I were asleep
Bright, delirious visions parade across them

It's an old picture
From the first days of film
And if I were the first movie critic
I would write of eerie shadows in fog
And unsettled ghostly figures

I would call it genius
Emerson's genius -- "our own rejected thoughts
Come back to us with alienated majesty
"
But maybe not as alienated here
For they come closer to "that gleam of light
Which flashes across our mind from within"
