Maw-Sit-Sit is an absolutely stunning green, and very rare,
Burmese gemstone which is found only in a town of the Maw-Sit-Sit (hence the name of the gem) in
Burma. Maw-Sit-Sit is
opaque to
translucent, electric green with swirling veins of deeper green or black, and sometimes with white spots. It is found in the same locations where
jadeite is formed by the same high pressures required to form jadeite.
Discovered in 1963 by gemologist Eduard Gubelin, Maw-Sit-Sit is often confused with jade. It is not jade but contains a composition of chrome jadeite, ureyite and natrolite. This gemstone has a Mohs hardness of 6 and great care should be taken when having stones set and when wearing these gemstones in jewelry.
