On July 11, 1987, the United Nations celebrated the birth of an eight pound boy named Matej Gaspar as the world's five billionth inhabitant. He was born to a Yugoslav nurse in the city of Zagreb, which is now the captial of Croatia. This was done by the United Nations Development Branch who declared July 11th, World Population Day in hopes of bringing more attention to pressing population issues.
