A group of heroes who were first published by
Fawcett Comics and
later by both
Charlton Comics and
DC Comics.
In the 1940's, the wizard Shazam chose a champion from among the
human race. Choosing young newsboy Billy Batson, Shazam endowed
Billy with:
whenever he said the word
SHAZAM! A bolt of mystic lightning
would come down and Billy Batson would be transformed into
Captain Marvel!
Captain Marvel first appeared in
Whiz Comics #1 in 1942.
Over the years, other people endowed with special abilities similar to
Billy's were born. Captain Marvel plus these others are commonly known as
