The maroon-bellied conure (Pyrrhura frontalis) is a small, gregarious parrot native to Brazil. They, along with green-cheeked conures (P. molinae) are becoming increasingly popular as pets in the US. While not possessing the talking abilities of the larger Aratinga conures, the Pyrrhura conures are still inquisitive, active, entertaining pets, often regarded as being quieter than their larger, more articulate cousins.
The birds sold in the US and most other first-world nations are the products of domestic breeding and are usually hand-fed, increasing their pet potential. The ease of obtaining maroon-bellied conures legally has curtailed the poaching/smuggling trade in this species.
