Maridia, part of the planet Zebes, as explored by Samus Aran in Super Metroid, revolutionary video game for the SNES.
Maridia is a water filled world which can only be fully navigated with the help of the Gravity Suit, which allows Samus to jump without being hindered by the water. Maridia is a very dangerous world, with psuedo Metroids flying around which are only too keen to kill Samus, quick sand, and a whole host of other nastiness. Luckily, it is only necessary to enter the place quite late in the game, when Samus should have an ample amount of Energy to protect her.
Some of the game's last (and best) items are found here, such as the Spring Ball and the excellent Space Jump. The boss which must be defeated to gain the Space Jump has an interesting method of defeating it - you can just shoot the hell out of it like normal, but if you have the Grappling Beam then a more humorous method of demise is possible..
Maridia can be accessed either through the glass tunnel in Brinstar, or through the elevator from Crateria. There is a passage to Brinstar as well, but unless you knew where it was, you wouldn't find it. This is because it is one of the very few moments in the game where (presumably on purpose) the X-Ray Scope doesn't pick up a secret entrance. And as well as that, if you try and use it from Brinstar into Maridia, you will find yourself blocked by an unopenable (from that side) door. Still, this really doesn't offer much more than an interesting aside to the game, as you could happily complete it without knowing that it was there.
