A popular 19th century beverage, made of red wine, unspecified flavorings, and cocaine, marketed as a "refreshing stimulant"(...and how!) throughout Britain, the Commonwealth, and the USA. A favorite of Queen Victoria, among other worthies, the company was so successful at one time that it published a book completely filled with photographs, profiles, and testimonials of its more well-known fans. A casualty (in America) of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act, it was succeeded in the States by a home-grown variant, Coca-Cola.
