Polish mathematician who developed the mathematics
behind the `bombes' used to break the Nazi enigma
encryption scheme. He, Jerzy Rózycki, and Henryk Zygalski developed the bombe, as well as another, non-mechanical, method for cracking Enigma. The (mainly British) group at Bletchley Park (including Alan Turing) went on to develop a method based on the bombes for breaking Enigma relatively quickly.
