The First 50000 Nodes

The First: 20000 - 30000 - 40000 - 50000 - more recent stats can be found on the E2 Annex

And now for the fourth installment of my voting and statistics project. In this round I've voted on every writeup and gathered statistics on every node from node_id #1 through #50000.

As I have explained each time, the information below only considers users and writeups that have a node_id of 50000 or less. So, for example, while there are writeups with more than 9 C!s, that is the highest value you will find in these early nodes. For a more in-depth description of this project and how I have collected the data, please see July 27, 2005.

The only new nodetypes found (as was last time) were e2nodes and writeups. Based on the creation times of all the nodes I looked at, we are still dealing with nodes that were imported from E1. Nearly all of the creation times were in late 1998 (for e2nodes) or November 13, 1999 (for writeups). There are more deleted nodes in the first 50000 than active nodes (i.e., you will only find 21751 nodes, the rest are Nothing Found).

It appears that there is something interesting going on with old noders. Every time I create one of these reports, more old users seem to be returning to E2 while the more recently active users are leaving. Since July 27, 2005, a total of 76 users who hadn't been seen since 2004 have "returned" and logged in. This number includes 13 users who had never logged into E2 (they were simply imported from E1). How would these E1 users remember their passwords (from over 7 years ago)? Because this is happening consistently, I'm starting to think that editors or admins are logging into these old accounts for maintenance or cleanup purposes. Would the editors care to comment on this?

TenMinJoe says The long-fled user "TMJ" got "logged into" effectively when it got turned into a msg forward for me; that would be an example of how these ancient accounts reappear.

Because all of these old noders are now listed as active, the average writeup count, XP, and merit have all gone up for active users - after all, the longer a user has been around, the more likely they are to have high stats.

The new popular writeup on the block in this group of nodes is How Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man have sex with the second most number of upvotes, the most number of downvotes, and the most number of total votes. Even with the most number of downvotes, it also has the third highest reputation of all the nodes I have come across with a rep of 164.

If you decide to visit any of the top or bottom rated nodes from any of the lists below, I encourage you to vote on the writeups you come across. Not only does this allow you to easily find places to spend all those votes and earn a little XP, but it also helps to make these reports different each time.

The reports below use the following markup to display changes from last round:

{+n} or {-n} - Numbers within curly braces indicate a change from the last calculations

* - An asterisk signifies that the entry is new to the list (when compared to the first 40000 nodes). Because they are new, no changes will be listed for these items.

If you are interested in generating statistics on your own writeups, you might be interested in my E2 Link and Logger Client. With it, you can generate lists similar to those below for display on your homenode.

Users with the Most Upvotes6

It should be noted that these users probably did not actually get as many new upvotes as it looks like they did. This change reflects the fact that I generated this information on 10000 new nodes, and this is the total increase in upvotes for all of those newly found nodes (plus the actual new upvotes). This note should be kept in mind for several of the other calculations below.

Another thing that should be kept in mind for voting information below is that while your reputation can fluctuate up and down the only way to lose upvotes, downvotes, or total votes is to have one or more of your writeups deleted.

Writeups with the Least Total Votes

I am the only person ever to vote on PROFS. There were four writeups listed last time whose only vote came from me which people have obviously voted on or the editors have nuked them since they are gone from the list now.

Most Controversial Writeups4

Zen stays on the list by getting on upvote and one downvote this round, but it is finally taken over (somewhat appropriately) by Date rape. Other than Saving Private Ryan, all the other writeups are new meaning the writeups listed last time have skewed one way or the other.

Cooled Writeups with the Lowest Reputation

It looks like these writeups never deserved a C! in the first place. Only Nate Oostendorp gained an upvote. I promise you it didn't deserve it. I can only assume that writeup hasn't been deleted because of CmdrTaco's reputation.

  1. Howard Roark by jeffpaulsen (-10) {-0}

Non-Cooled Writeups with the Highest Reputation

These writeups have been around for over 6 years and have never received a C!

  1. Meme by Scam (102) {+0}
  2. Noam Chomsky by ryano (98) {+0}

Averages

It makes sense that the older a writeup is, the more votes (up or down) that it will accumulate. This can be seen by the fact that with the addition of all the newer writeups all of the average votes went down. Another variable that would affect these averages is writeup deletions.

Average Upvotes per Writeup:      16.840 {-0.555}
Average Downvotes per Writeup:     6.826 {-0.245}
Average Total Votes per Writeup:  23.666 {-0.800}
Average Reputation per Writeup3:  10.273 {-0.354} (True Rep5: 10.014 {-0.309})

Totals

Total Upvotes:      54360 {+11169}
Total Downvotes:    22035  {+4477}
Total Votes:        76395 {+15646}
Total Reputation3:  33162 {+6774} (True Rep5: 32325 {+6692})
Total Cools:          490 {+119}

What If...

If all of the writeups in the first 50000 node_ids were submitted by a single user, and they spent as many votes as they received, that user would have the following stats:

Level:     10 {+1}
Writeups: 3228 {+745} (enough writeups for level 12)
XP: 27416 {+5695} (enough writeups for level 10)
Merit: 6.138 {-0.352} (no merit bonus)
Node-Fu:      8.493 {-0.255}

1 Several thousand nodes (users, writeups, etc.) were imported into E2 (from E1) over the course of several days. This significantly affects certain values and calculations because the timestamps are not the 'real' create times. The information above is correct based on the data reported by E2 - with one exception. There is one obvious manual database update to the user trillium (node_id 3143) that I had to remove from the results of noding speedometer. This E1 user has a createtime listed as 1/1/2006.
2 A small number of nodes in E2 (137 in this batch) do not return a timestamp. In addition, it seems that some of the nodes have had their dates manually changed. Because of this, calculations above which require a timestamp ignore nodes that are missing this information, and may give unexpected results. (See also #1)
3 There are numerous reasons why the value of upvotes minus downvotes does not always equal the value of reputation. There were some bugs on the site with voting at one time, and nodes that are restored from node heaven often have this problem.
4 In this case 'Most Controversial' means the writeup where the absolute value of the true reputation5 divided by the total number of votes is close to zero. In other words, the writeup has a lot of votes with about half of the people upvoting it, and half of the people downvoting it.
5 'True reputation' refers to the value calculated by subtracting the downvotes from the upvotes. See #3 for why this might not be the same as the displayed reputation.
6 Calculations regarding votes or reputation only consider users with writeups in the specified node_id range.
7 Since a user's homenode contains the number of writeups that the user has on E2, these writeup counts may include nodes which are not in the specified node_id range.
8 Since an e2node can contain numerous writeups, these writeup counts may include nodes which are not in the specified node_id range.
9 Writeup titles have had '(person)', '(place)', '(thing)', '(idea)', and '(definition)' removed from their length.

I am hardly immortal. I may be told that I have a heart of gold and that my reputation will live on forever, and that my good influences will linger like the odor of sanctity, but I will die. I may live to be 110, or even older, but I will die, that is certain.

This means, by the way of thinking I am following right now, that I will never be able to read every book ever written, or play all the RPG's ever made, or see all the episodes of my favorite animes. I will never watch every movie, or meet every person on the planet.

It is sort of like this place if you think about it: We know we will never be able to node everything about everything, because the second we think we have it all, there is so much more all of a sudden.

But still we try.

It seems like all I can do is make the most of my life with the time that I have. That's one item on the list of reasons I became a member of this group. By contributing writeups, I am putting in my part in the effort to make note of everything.

To some, the ultimate quest is to cheat death. To others, it is to get rich, or become famous. To me, and I am sure I am not the only one, to me, it is about expanding my spirit, and opening up to the magnificent world that I am honored to be a part of.

The first day I discovered E2, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Now, three years later, I owe these people a big thanks, straight from my heart.

Thank you, E2. May the happiness overcome the sadness.
