Sure there's more than one level of loneliness.

I live devoid of the company of others. There is nobody around for miles, and I am lonely.

I live in a sprawling suburb, surrounded by the houses of strangers. My friends are far away, and I am lonely.

I am in a crowd of people. They don't know me, they don't think of me or anyone else they didn't bring with them as they move along, jostling against me. I am lonely.

I am in front of a crowd of people. They are not my friends, but I tell them they are. They do not know me as anything but an icon on a pedestal. When they walk away they will think about other things and put me out of their mind. I am lonely.

I like you. You don't know me. I am lonely.
