fiber obtained from the leaf-stalks of a
species of
banana (
Musa textilis) native to the
Philippines. The oldest, outermost stalks give the strongest, darkest fibers, three to nine feet long. Because it is strong and buoyant, it is used for
cables,
carpets, and
ships'
hawsers.
