Austronesian-speaking people of the island of
Madura in the
Kangean Islands, and nearby coastal regions of northeast
Java. They cultivate
rice and raise export
cattle on Madura, and are well-known in Java as migrant labourers, traders, fishermen and
sailors. Population approximately 5 million.
