An area in eastern Germany
, historically two lands. Inhabited by Wends
, or Sorbs, a Slavic
nation with its own language, which has however become a small minority among Germans in the centuries after it was separated from the Lands of the Czech
The Sorbian or Wendic
language has two main dialects that match the former administrative division - "Upper Sorbian" in "Upper Lusatia" (bordering the Czech Republic
in the south, and indeed the language is more similar to Czech
), and "Lower Sorbian" in "Lower Lusatia" (more similar to Polish).
The traditional centres of the lands are Bautzen (Budyšin in Sorbian) and Cottbus (Chočebuz).
