A lorgnette is a hand-held pair of eyeglasses that can be hung around the neck on a cord or hidden in a pocket. A sophisticated lorgnette appears to be stored as a monocle, but springs open to a pair of eyeglasses at a touch. In Victorian England, some men and women preferred using lorgnettes to eyeglasses with ear wires for vanity's sake.
