A cholesterol-lowering drug ("cervistatin") which used to be one of the three biggest cash-cows of a huge german pharmaceutical company. Cholesterol-synthesis (CSE) inhibitors - "Statins" - are very effective and necessary drugs in the treatment and prevention of e.g. coronary heart disease or stroke but they can cause dangerous side effects, especially "rhabdomyolysis", a possibly lethal lysis of sceletal muscle (The typical symptom is "muscle weakness"). Lipobay was withdrawn in Europe and the U.S. because of increasing numbers of reports of rhabdomyolysis, especially in patients which were simultaneously treated with "gemfibrazil" (another lipid-lowering drug).
