A LIMS is a Laboratory Information Management System and consists usualy of a database, a set of business rules and a user interface. When a sample enters a laboratory it is logged in to the LIMS with his properties and the kind of analyses that have to be done with it. It is assigned to the worksheet of some guy in a white coat who does the analyses. If he's lucky the results are automaticly transferred from the analysis apparatus to the LIMS or else he has to type them manualy from his laboratory notebook. His boss then checks the results and prints a report wich is send to the person who send the sample to the laboratory.
