"Like a Virgin" is the title song of Madonna's album by the same name. The tune was released on Halloween in 1984. Written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, it was recorded at The Power Station and released by Sire Records. The producer for this song was Nile Rogers, a member of the band Chic and the man who helped David Bowie make one of his comebacks on his Let's Dance album.

When "Like a Virgin" came out, the video and the song caused quite an uproar. On MTV, the video was in heavy rotation and had Madonna cavorting around in Venice, Italy on a gondola, crooning about being touched for the very first time. This made a lot of parents become concerned that their little girls were going to start inquiring about virginity and sex in general. Several radio stations refused to play it, but there were others that were happy to get the extra listeners. This song, along with "Material Girl", were the songs that cemented Madonna's career as a top recording star. The song eventually climbed to the number one Billboard slot and stayed there for six weeks over Christmas 1984.
