1941-1999. Trumpeter, composer/arranger, avant-garde showman; from St. Louis, with a musical extended family that includes trombonist Joe (a "punk-jazz" fixture in the circa-1980 NYC downtown scene), ex-wife Fontella Bass (of "Rescue Me" fame), and&genius gospel music singer David Peaston. Most famous as the guy dressed for surgery in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, his other works are diasporic hybrids that, like his trumpet style, embody the AEC's "Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future" motto.
