An exhortation from one character to another in Mrs. Humphry Ward's novel, Robert Elsmere. The older man, an Oxford don who does not subscribe to Anglican orthodoxy, is advising his former student and friend, who is a Church of England clergyman who has lost his faith. However, his advice seems applicable to the dilemmas of many other spiritual seekers.
