Alexander was known for wondering around New Hampshire wearing a flannel shirt during the 1996 campaign. Alexander called it quits early in the 2000 campaign after a poor showing in the Iowa Straw Poll.

He may have begun the craze for school vouchers, seen by some as a way to funnel tax dollars into Christian schools (as payback for their Reagan/Bush support) and into the Edison Project of his friend Chris "Channel One" Whittle.
