Lakshmi (also spelled Laxmi) is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, beauty, pleasure, and abundance. She is the mother of Kama (the god of Love). She is the wife of Vishnu throughout all his incarnations. Lakshmi has four arms, and she holds a vase with fortune and wealth in one of them. She is usually pictured atop a lotus leaf wearing a red sari covered with jewels.

Lakshmi has two other forms, Shreedevi and Bhudevi. As Shreedevi, she bestows wealth and royal authority upon men. In this form, she is also Vishnu's shakti, his source of divine power. As Bhudevi, the earth-goddess, she provides food, clothes, shelter, and other necessities to all creatures.
