Pakistan's second largest city, situated on the Ravi River. Capital of the Punjab province, it is filled with the art, history and culture of this prosperous region, especially from the time of the Mughal Empire.

After the Mughal period the city changed hands several times, suffering especially in the Sikh invasion of the 18th century.

Gives its name to the Lahore Resolution, the 1940 declaration by the All-India Muslim League stating that only a separate state for Muslims would be acceptable to them in the event of British withdrawal.
