Japanese word meaning, heart or mental attitude

Kokoro is also a 19th-century Japanese novel written by Natsume Soseki and translated into English by Edwin McClellan.

The story takes place in 19th century Japan, a period in Japan's history of intense change as a long-isolated culture suddenly comes into contact with the modernized West. On this stage, Soseski tells a story about two men, one young, one old, who both encounter loneliness as a major factor of their lives. One of them is named simply Sensei, the other is the narrator.

I was forced to read this novel in High School, I never finished it, but in hindsight the book was very profound. It is a very good introduction to Japanese culture and philosophy, as well as a good way to get a sense of what Japanese life was like in the 1800's. Definetely a good read.
