Character actor, starred in numerous movie, TV, and stage roles from the 1940s into the 1990s. Known for his outlandish nose, which he broke playing basketball as a youth. Some of his most famous roles were in these movies and TV shows:

A Streetcar named Desire (1951)
On the Waterfront (1954)
Pollyanna (1960)
Patton (1970)
The Streets of San Francisco (1972-77)

He is perhaps most famous today as the spokesperson for American Express, and the catch phrase "Don't leave home without it!"
