Kipling was referring to is probably the
krait, a highly venomous snake indigenous to India.
The film The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo features a snake charmer and tracker called Karait, played by Dyrk Ashton, who works with the hunter Buldeo to track down Mowgli for P.T. Barnum. He has a trained giant python who assists him.
