From the Tokyo's Best Stuff series.

Kamakura is a terrific day trip that is within easy reach of Tokyo. From the central Tokyo station, this outlying suburb is around an hour's ride.

Almost a century ago, this reigon was once the capital of Japan, although these days (late 20th century) Kamakura is really a commuter's town for sarari-men working in Tokyo.

But why is this a great day out, you may be asking? Well, from the Imperial past of Kamakura there are almost a hundred shrines and temples that welcome visitors (Japanese are very tolerant of "gaijin" so long as they're respectful and remove their shoes before entering sacred spaces). The Great Buddha is a standout.
