I remember the cheering when Obama was elected.
It represented hope. It represented change. It represented the notion that Yet Another Old White Guy wasn't going to be running the show, making decisions that were going to screw everyone over.
And then, well, we couldn't quite close Guantanamo. As we promised. Or do something about all the wars. As we promised. Jobs? Well, it's Bush's fault. Bankers wrecked the economy? Couldn't give them your tax dollars fast enough, with no safeguards to prevent them crashing the economy again.
We were going to get health care. What we got was legal precedent for the government to be able to force you to buy something from a private corporation. Prices doubled, the deductibles went so high it's now just catastrophic insurance for most people. Sick? Tough it out - you get no help on the bill until your bills hit $8000.
And anyone who thought the leader of the Choom Gang was going to legalize what he smoked daily in Hawaii was, well, smoking something. "Let me be clear", said Obama, characteristically, "we should eliminate all climate change. FIRST."
And now, his coup de grace. The last rung on his rake's progress, the selling of his soul evident on the rapid and premature aging visible on his face.
The TPP just about guarantees now that copyrights exist forever, and that ISPs have to enforce them, police traffic, and maintain the policies of the corporations, which are now "investor states" with more power than actual states with actual people in them. First and foremost now is profit, which is to be maintained at all cost, and should something stand in its way, well, then the law that prevents it has to go away (a non-elected body of three corporate lawyers will decide) or at the very least, the corporation will send a bill to the government for "expected profits" and be paid what they would have made anyway.
Generic drugs will be a thing of the past. You WILL pay the corporate rate what the corporation wants, and it will attempt to maximize profit. A drug that costs $1 a bag in Laos will be made to be $150 per pill. This will have huge effects on public health, and of course, Pfizer profit.
What happens when a Chinese company wants to bulk-import 50,000,000 people into the Bay Area? Never mind our immigration laws, that's what the corporation wants. There goes 50,000,000 Green Cards, regardless of the effect. Think of how much profit could be made in fast-tracking people past immigration law.
And Obama fast-tracked it. Of course we can't see the text of the bill until we sign it, but it was negotiated "in good faith" by corporate lawyers all over the first world, not to worry. Never miind the WikiLeaks that pretty much guarantee your vote will be irrelevant, forever.
And nobody seems to care.
But hey, don't worry kids, there's good news! Apparently we have a new hero for you called Bernie Sanders, he's an outsider like you and not part of the Man, and everything. He's going to give you free college, and work for the little guy. For Main Street, not Wall Street. For Americans. Just like the last guy, with his hope and change.
