I have compiled a list of Judo throws, named with both Japanese and English.

Many or all techniques within Judo exist in some form in Jiu-Jitsu. This is due to Judo origins being based in Jiu-Jitsu however, once Judo was created it strongly influenced other Jiu-Jitsu Ryu with techniques being 'shared'.

Throws can be split up in several ways and each can be placed into specific groups. Personally I try to remember throws by grouping them in the following groups (this does not represent the official groups):

  • Gari - Foot sweeps
  • Goshi - Hip throws
  • Guruma - Wheels
  • Nage - Throws
  • Otoshi - Drops
  • Gake - Hooks
  • Miscellaneous - e.g.Sumi Gaeshi, Uchi Mata etc.
