Tetzel was hired by Archbishop Albert in 1517 to help sell indulgences for the Catholic Church.

Tetzel pursued an aggresive advertising campaign which seems to have been a great sucess. His motto was: as soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs.

A Dominican Friar in the early 16th century, his tour of Germany selling indulgences for Albert of Brandenburg (who had purchased the Archbishopric of Mainz in 1514) caused Martin Luther to fear that the Catholic Church was about to drain Germany of wealth the way they did Italy. This prompted Luther to write his Ninety-five Theses.
