John Carver was elected the first governor of the Plymouth Colony and this was re-confirmed on April 2, 1621. He died of stroke while working in the fields a few days after the Mayflower left Plymouth for England. John Carver was rich, as evidenced the three men servants (Roger Wilder, John Howland, and William Latham) and maidservant (Dorothy) he bought out with him on the Mayflower.
His wife Katherine was from Sturton le Steeple, Nottingham, England and died five or six weeks after her husband. She was the sister of pastor John Robinson's wife Bridget.
