The region of western Kentucky and Tennessee roughly defined by the Tennessee River to the East, the Northern shore of The Ohio River to the North the Mississippi River to the west. Secured from the Chickasaw in 1818 by Andrew Jackson. Jackson told the Chickasaw to accept the terms of the 1818 treaty or the land would be taken by force. Boundary disputes between Kentucky and Tennessee prevented it from being opened up for settlement until Jan. 20, 1820. While most growth in the area was the result of it being a major river shipping hub it was not until the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Authority under FDR’s New Deal that the region enjoyed prosperity.
