This song, written by Paul Anka and recorded by Buddy Holly, became a hit a month after Holly's death in February 1959. The recording features an orchestral arrangement, one of the first in a pop rock song, and one coming eight years before Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The song also features Holly's signature "hiccup" vocal technique: "And wasted all my days over you-ou-ou-ou-ahou." Despite its dated language (such as "golly gee"), and an atmosphere that seems just a tad too happy for the lyrics, I find the song still captures the universal feeling of a break up. It's impossible for me to avoid Beatles references when writing about Holly, so I'll finish with this: while similarly-themed songs like "Yesterday" are perhaps better, "It Doesn't Matter Any More" was first, and it's still worth listening to.
