"This wasn't how it was supposed to be," I say, looking across the table at two of my friends. "We aren't supposed to have to be afraid of being raped by our friends. We shouldn't have to worry that about getting beat up in the middle of the night by homophobes. We shouldn't have to be so damn scared all the time."

She looked across the table at me, with her eyes full of tears. We had just heard of the death of Matthew Shepard. "They never promised us anything more, did they? It's not supposed to be anything."

"Bullshit," her girlfriend interrupted. "They promised me that I could be anything, love anyone, that I was worthy of respect and love. Where the hell are their promises now?"

"I don't know," I sighed. "But they sure ain't here."
