Isobelle Carmody

Born in 1958, in Wangaratta, a town in Victoria, Australia. Eldest (?) of eight, she grew up looking after her brothers and sisters, keeping them in line by telling horror stories.

She began writing Obernewtyn at the age of 14, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in literature and philosophy. After completing her degree, Carmody found work as a journalist and in public relations, as well as working on her writing. Obernewytn was published in 1987, and was shortlisted for the 1988 Childrens Book Council Book of the Year awards (Older Readers).

Since then, her stature as one of Australia's leading fantasy writers has grown, and she now divides her time between living at home on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria and travelling abroad. When in Australia she regularly visits schools as a public speaker, lectures and passionately promotes her books to her readers. She gave birth to a daughter, Adelaide, on 17th July 1998.
