A novel by Paul Edwin Zimmer. A human becomes entwined in wild elf magics and loses his heart to a young elf maiden. Stricken by grief at loving a mortal man, she rejects him. Driven fairly well crazy by his broken heart and the magics, Ingulf sets out to perform heroic deeds - hoping to prove his worth to her or die trying.
The concept is excellent, the detailed writing of a kingdom built upon slavery and mastery of werewolf soldiers is quite engaging. But the story seems to slow and grope its way along after the initial premise wears itself thin.
Fun read, though. I'd love to play in an RPG setting in Zimmer's world. Ingulf appears again in A Gathering of Heroes.
