"Interactive Voice Response", or IVR for short, refers to anything you interact with in the telephony world. This interaction usually takes the form of navigating menus, making choices and inputting data using touch-tone telephones, but in more modern systems this can include speech recognition (for example, saying a persons name instead of entering a forgetable extension), or better interaction (mail systems that read you your e-mail, for example).
