I have memories of the sky

from mostly 3 o'clock a.m.

telescopic events, meteors

and moonful nights

I have memories of the sky

held by my father, long dead

and the smell of whiskey,

names of constellations,

thunderstorms on the porch

and looking for acorns in rain

I have memories of the sky

from our dawn's early light

to every afternoon's dying dusk,

the backyard fire pit crackling

Billions of birds singing

and not even ornithologists know

if they are asking for directions,

another bird to join in bird bliss

or if birds are shouting the refrain

I have memories of the sky
