When Sir Christopher Wren stood surveying the wrecked remains of the first St. Paul's Cathedral (which had been destroyed in the Great London Fire of 1666) he asked a workman to bring him a headstone from the graveyard to mark where the cornerstone had been. The workman returned shortly with one reading "I Shall Rise Again". Sir Wren found this to be so ironic that he had the words inscribed over the south door of the new cathedral.
