The title of this node also refers to a play by John Van Druten which was, in turn, based on a series of short stories called "Berlin Stories" by Christopher Isherwood. The 1952 play version was musicalized by Harold Prince and the musical team of Kander and Ebb as "Cabaret".

I'm not familiar with the earlier versions, but the story of the musical centers around Sally Bowles, a not particularly talented, but always mesmerizing, singer working in a sleazy night club in Berlin on the verge of the collapse of the Weimar Republic. The revival currently playing on Broadway is directed by Sam Mendes ("American Beauty"), and manages to make the decadence of the original play serve as a reflection of modern society.
