Huey Newton was one of the cofounders of the The Black Panther Party. It was their response to rampant police brutality and the disorganization of the African-American community.

Newton was convicted in the murder of a police officer in 1967 but the charge was later overturned. In the early 1970's he announced that The Black Panthers were adopting a policy of non-violent community service. One of the most successful of those programs was the Free Breakfast Program for school aged African-American children.

In 1974 he was accused of another murder and fled to Cuba for three years. When he came back to the United States two of his trials ended with hung juries.

He was killed on an Oakland street corner in 1989. There are several monuments for him in Oakland.
