They're all in another world.
Their families are close-knit and loving,
their grandparents all alive and well,
their parents are happily married and faithful,
functional and fulfilled on all sides

I am so far from that ideal.
All of my grandparents are dead,
my parents are filled with contempt for each other,
and the rest of my family is distanced across an entire sea,
separated by language and miles

I can't relate to the rest of them,
just as I've never been able to relate to this twisted American narrative,
expecting to climb the corporate ladder of success
but finding only isolation and failure

Not all risks are worth taking,
and my parents tasted this bitter truth too late,
the damage already being done
